Handling Basics
Everything you need to know before getting started with a sidecar.
Forget everything you know about leaning a motorcycle in a turn. Your body weight cannot balance it anymore.
Giving it gas pulls the bike to the right. Letting off the gas (decelerating) pulls the bike to the left.
This is the term for lifting the sidecar wheel off the ground during a sharp or fast right turn. Beginners should avoid this.
Try to do most of your braking in a straight line. Hitting the brakes hard in a turn can make the sidecar slide sideways.
Sidecars are safe and street-legal in every US state, but they completely alter a motorcycle’s center of gravity and physics. Riding one requires learning an entirely new skill set. Without proper training, asymmetrical handling, off-center braking, and the risk of the sidecar wheel lifting during sharp turns can be dangerous.
